Prinicpal Investigator

Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine
Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine
Associate Program Director and Associate Dean for the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)
Graduate Faculty, School of Medicine – Dept. of Cellular and Molecular Pathology

Research Interests

Dr. Kliment’s laboratory is interested in identifying new molecular pathways connecting mitochondrial dysfunction with epithelial and innate immune cell function in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and pulmonary fibrosis to improve therapeutic options for patients. Our lab specifically studies the role of adenine nucleotide translocase (a canonical mitochondrial ADP/ATP transporter) in the airway and alveolar epithelium of the lung in the context of cigarette smoking-related lung disease and lung fibrosis.

Bio

I have been passionate about lung research for many years. I am originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, where I got my Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and Biology (Go Big Red!). I got my MD, PhD from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Scientist Training Program and completed my internal medicine residency at Brigham and Womens Hospital/Harvard. I then joined Johns Hopkins University in 2014 to complete her Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship. I joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 2018. I am board-certified in pulmonary medicine, critical care and internal medicine with a clinical focus in intensive care and outpatient COPD and post-COVID infection care. I am passionate about developing strong teams, teaching the next generation and mentoring others in medicine and science. I love teaching from basic science to clinical medicine and career development.

Interests

I am trying to improve my green thumb by growing a lime tree and starting a garden! I passionate about playing and exploring with my kids, cooking and baking bread, exercising, and playing piano.
